Why are non specific Beta antagonists used to treat hypertension?
Monday, February 20th, 2012Propanolol is a nonspecific Beta antagonist used to treat hypertension.
When B1 receptors are stimulated it increases heart rate and contractility. So the antagonistic effect is decrease in heart rate and contractility.
When B2 receptors are stimulated it causes vasodilation of blood vessels. So the antagonistic effect should be vasoconstriction.
If you decrease the heart rate and contractility AND vasoconstrict the blood vessels why would that lead to lower blood pressure? Is the effect of the B1 receptors dominant?
Thanks in advance.
